Right to Information Empowerment Programme - Strategic Litigation Support
The Right to Information Empowerment Programme aims at improving the right to information legislation, the implementation and enforcement of such legislation and the utilisation of the right to information as a tool for democracy, good governance and the protection of human rights in a number of South Asian countries, including India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The programme focuses on facilitating the effective engagement of non-governmental organizations, civil society organisations, human rights activists and development experts in the field of the right to information, through awareness raising, capacity building, research activities and strategic litigation support.
Strategic litigation is a method or technique that falls within the field of public interest litigation that uses the court system to achieve public policy reform, law reform and social change through test cases. In the field of right to information strategic litigation can be used to promote the improvement of right to information legislation, its broad interpretation as well as its implementation and enforcement.
In the framework of the Right to Information Empowerment Programme Public Affairs Centre envisages to support strategic litigation cases of South Asian non-governmental organisations through advice notes and amici curia in order to improve right to information legislation, its broad interpretation as well as its implementation and enforcement.
