Pourakarmika (Municipal Sweepers) Day

POURAKARMIKA (Municipal sweepers) DAY

Thank a Pourakarmika - bring a smile on his or her face!

9th October 2009 (Friday)

v  Apathetic Citizens litter our streets and dump garbage in street corners and empty plots, but the untiring efforts of Pourakarmikas ensure the cleanliness of our neighbourhoods. Very few of us are sensitive to the person who collects our garbage.

v  Do you know that Pourakarmikas are paid a very low salary? They have one day in a week as a holiday and nothing more through the year.  Unlike us, they don’t get holidays for festivals. In fact, they have to work extra during festival days, to clear up the mess that we make!!

CMCA is celebrating a unique day – Pourakarmika Day on 9th October 2009 (Friday). Civic Club members from all our 100 clubs will visit ward health offices to thank our Pourakarmikas and recognize their untiring efforts in keeping our city clean and healthy. We will put up ‘Thank You’ cards in all ward offices to spread the message to others around us.

You also can be a part of this special day. Here are some of the things you can do:

· Know your Pourakarmikas. When they come home to pick up your garbage, exchange a greeting or smile and thank them. It will make their job much more pleasant.
· Organize a “thank you” card from your organization for all the Pourakarmikas of your ward.
· Be responsible for your garbage. Separate your waste into wet and dry waste. If you are disposing of medicine bottles, syringes or broken glass, give it to them separately
· Reduce what you throw. Recycle what you can. Compost your wet waste and throw only what is completely useless. Our city is drowning in garbage and each of us must make an effort to waste less.
· Never litter the streets. Someone has to do the dirty job of picking up what you throw.
· Never throw your garbage in drains, plots or street corners. It is illegal and insensitive. Do not allow your maid or family members to throw garbage out. Wait for your door-to-door collector to come, even if it means keeping the garbage till next day. We can’t keep our city dirty and our houses clean. Our city is also our home
· Forward this message to as many people as you can and change the way we treat our Pourakarmikas. You can also display this message on your notice board.

Thank a Pourakarmika on Pourakarmika Day and make his / her day!

Thank you!
