Corruption in NREGS Workshop

PAC joined hands with Partnership Transparency Fund (PTF) and initiated a forum “Citizens Against Corruption (CAC)” to work through Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in curbing corruption in two most popular government programmes, amongst many, namely, NREGA and PDS that influence the livelihoods of the majority of the people in India. In this connection, currently, we are working with 14 CSO partners across Orissa (7 partners), Karnataka (4 partners) and one partner each in Uttarakhand, Rajasthan and Kerala. Hitherto, baseline information in the respective operational areas of the CSOs has been established and contours of corruptions have been mapped to certain extent. At this juncture, we would like to consult organisations and individuals working on corruption in NREGA and seek the opinions to strengthen our initiatives.

It is in this regard we are hosting a thematic workshop on NREGA being held on 6th March 2010 at Hotel Marion, Bhubhaneshwar. The objectives of the workshop include:

·         Highlighting the positive elements of NREGA in the project areas of our CSOs;

·         Sharing the gaps identified and measures planned, and seeking the advice of the floor in enriching the implementation process; and

·         Working-out possibilities to network with organisations and individuals in creating platforms for sharing similar experiences and policy advocacy

We welcome the involvement of interested stakeholders in such initiatives who are willing to work out joint action plans in curbing the corruption and improving the governance for the good of general public.
